Damaged roof with missing shingles -- winter roof damage

Subtle Signs Your Roof Needs A Repair

Just like every other part of your home, your roof will eventually need a repair. Sometimes the need is obvious, like a giant branch poking a hole in your ceiling, but often it is more subtle. Learn some of the signs your roof needs a repair that are not obvious to the untrained eye!

The Great Blizzard

It is not a secret that Winter in Roanoke is often cold and icy. The weather usually drops into the low teens consistently, and we have multiple snow and ice storms, often with gusty winds. A harsh Winter is also likely not kind to your roof.

Between ice, broken branches, and extreme temperatures, a lot of Winter roof damage was possible this year. Want to learn about some obvious and more subtle signs that your roof may need a repair? Look no further!

Watch The Bubbles

One of the easiest signs your roof needs repair is checking the ceilings at the highest level of your house. If any of them have paint that has begun to bubble or crack, your roof is likely leaking into your ceiling. If you see bubbling paint, then it is time to go into your attic and check for boards in the roof that are visibly wet.

This checkup is a good idea to do at least quarterly, even if you do not suspect a leak, as it will help you catch problems before they become catastrophes. If you see any wet boards or visible rotting boards, you have a roof leak.

Loose Shingles Sink Ships

A couple of loose shingles don’t seem like that big of a deal, but if shingles are not aligned properly, then they are not properly diverting water to run off of your roof.

It is always best practice to hire a roofing inspector to handle this culprit. If you have damaged or missing shingles, the pros at Reconco can easily replace them, extending the life of your roof.

Soft Or Spongy Steps

In the course of examining your roof for signs it needs repair, if any of the areas you step on are soft or spongy, that is a problem. Usually, it indicates that one or more of the boards under your shingles have gotten wet and begun to rot. A healthy roof will have no give to it at all.

This is also a fixable issue by the pros, especially if it is caught early, and involves pulling the singles off the affected area, prying up and replacing the damaged boards, and then putting new shingles down as a finishing touch.

Early Inspection Gets The Worm

If you aren’t quite sure what you are looking for, it is a great idea to hire a roof inspector to come check out your roof for you. They will be well-trained in looking for subtle signs of damage that you might not notice, and may be able to spot a problem before damage has even occurred.

Especially after a harsh Roanoke winter, getting a roof inspection is a good idea to ensure your roof is in good shape going into Spring! Click here to schedule your roof inspection or roof repair in Roanoke, VA today!
